Why choose VSO?
VSO only works with local partners that have requested our help. We have a country office everywhere we work, and a strong belief that well-managed volunteering creates real results.
This means that you’ll only be placed where your skills are needed, and you’ll be supported by local people that are working in ways approved at a local, national and international level. And, if you have any problem, there’s people there to support you.
We have over 50 years experience placing volunteers.
Before you go
Volunteering abroad can be a significant lifestyle change for many volunteers. So there’s a comprehensive induction programme to help you:
- Adapt to living and working in a developing country
- Understand development issues in your country
- Plan all the things that need to get done before departure
- Understand local cultural, social and political developments, how to stay healthy and safe, relationships and behaviour
- Access basic language training
You’ll also get to meet other volunteers as part of your training.
When you’re there
Once you are in-country, although your primary relationship will be with your employer, our country office is always there to help with major personal, medical or security problems.
In terms of financial support, VSO will typically cover the following costs:
- criminal record check
- medical insurance and required immunisations and anti-malarials
- your training, including accommodation and food whilst on residential training weekends
- one return flight to get you to, and home from, your placement
- accommodation whilst in your placement
- an allowance to cover your basic living expenses whilst overseas.
