Before you apply

We’re delighted that you’re interested in volunteering with VSO. Please read the information below to start searching available vacancies and begin your application.

If you would like to discuss your options with us, please give us a call on +44 (0) 20 8780 7500

What you’ll need to apply

Once you’ve found a placement you’re interested in applying for, please read the person specification of the job description attached to the advert and check you meet the minimum criteria for the role.

You’ll need 30-40 minutes to complete the online application form, which includes  a CV and supporting statement. This needs to be done in one single sitting. If you require an alternative application format, please contact us. You must submit your application in English.

You may apply for more than one placement, although if you are shortlisted for one of these, you will be withdrawn from the selection process for the others.

It’s a good idea to gather together the information you’ll need before applying. You’ll need to upload or include:

  • personal details
  • details of your current or most recent employment (for example; job title, dates of employment, summary of responsibilities)
  • updated CV in Word format (max size 200KB).
  • supporting statement of maximum 1500 words (you’ll need to refer to the job description attached to the advert for this in order to detail how you meet the criteria specified).

After you’ve applied

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a confirmation email containing further information about the next steps.

You’ll be informed if you’ve been shortlisted for the volunteer role within two weeks of the closing date detailed on the placement for which you applied.

The process of being assessed, selected, and preparing to leave on an international placement usually takes 5 months from the date of you submitting an application. This is to allow time for volunteers to complete pre-departure briefing, along with all the necessary logistics such as arranging visas, work permits and medical and criminal background checks.

Fundraising

Upon accepting a placement, each UK volunteer commits to raising at least £985 prior to going overseas with VSO. Don’t worry if you’ve never fundraised before: you’ll agree a plan with our dedicated fundraising support officer, and we’ll give you advice, support and resources to help you reach your target.
