ELT Volunteer Jobs in Rwanda
Teach English in a Primary or Lower Secondary School
Although 94% of school-aged children enrol in primary school, only 17% pass the exam to move onto secondary level. If you've got 3 years' teaching experience, you could be teaching students in Primary or Lower Secondary Schools, ensuring that they’ve got the English skills needed to move on to the next level (occasionally we maybe able to consider applicants with 2 year's experience). We also have a number of volunteer jobs that combine classroom teaching and teacher training - a great opportunity to get invaluable training experience!
For most of our Rwanda EFL jobs you'll need to speak intermediate to advanced French.
Five facts about Rwanda- By law, at least a third of the Parliament representation must be female. Rwanda recently topped a survey of the number of women in any parliament with 49% female representation.
- Kigali is one of the few capital cities in the world without a branch of McDonalds.
- 50% of the population of Rwanda is under 18.
- Rwanda is well known for its Gorilla population - as popularised in the book and film Gorillas in the Mist.
- It is considered disrespectful to call adults by their name (either first name or surname). This is because a great deal of importance is attached to names and you have to earn the right to be told them, especially with older people. The appropriate form of address is 'Mamma' or 'Pappa' for older people, and 'Sister' or 'Brother' for younger people.
