Global Educators' Register

What is the Global Educators Register?

The Global Educators Register (GER) is a national online register of professionals (not only teachers) with international experience, who are committed to global education and schools partnerships, and have a willingness to assist teachers, schools and their communities. The register is free for schools to use.

Who are global educators?

Global educators are professionals who have experience of living and working around the world. They have all worked as VSO volunteers, which means they have lived and worked for usually two years in a Southern country. All the global educators are people who:
  • want to use their experience to help schools to build awareness and understanding of development in classroom activities
  • can help bring a classroom to life with inspiring stories, materials and artefacts from a specific Southern country
  • can support schools in planning how to introduce a global dimension into the school curriculum or,
  • have been through the process of setting up and managing a successful global school partnership.

Who can use the register?

Teachers who want first hand experiences of developing countries to illustrate class work or inspiring stories, materials and artefacts from specific countries. Schools who want to link or twin their school with another overseas or who want to promote a global element into the curriculum.

Where have global educators lived and worked?

Africa, Asia, eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

What help can I get from global educators?

Global educators can visit your school for a talk or to help set up a linking project, or working closely to provide advice to help embed a global dimension into the curriculum.
The register is about dispelling myths about the developing world. About getting away from stereotypes of poverty that we see all the time in our media. And about realising how much we have in common and how little separates us. Global educators can help schools by opening doors, helping young people to empathise with situations in other countries and giving young people a richer education, because if they're just focused on what happens in the UK they’re missing out on so much.

(Frances Platt)

What are the benefits of using the register?

The National Curriculum encourages schools to prepare pupils for living in a global society. Guidance for schools says that a global dimension in lessons can help children of all ages link their lives with children internationally, and examine their own values and attitudes, and give them knowledge and skills to have an active role in the global community. The GER can help teachers bring a global dimension into the classroom, through many subjects, with real experiences and materials. Global educators can also help schools link up to foster understanding and combat prejudice.

What are global educators’ areas of expertise?

Global educators collectively have experience in the UK and internationally of many aspects of education, in primary, secondary, special education needs and management.

Why does the register exist?

The register is a response to educational needs of teachers in the UK. VSO has a great resource of professionals who are willing to help schools develop a global dimension in class work. The register is a useful resource for teachers and it helps VSO volunteers to continue using their professional skills and overseas experiences back in the UK.
The register is a useful resource and the best aspect is that it's a people resource, rather than a book resource. The register gives you the opportunity to meet people and talk to people.

How does it work?

VSO actively encourages its returned volunteers to sign up with the register. Teachers can then search the register for free for global educators who live close to their school. The register will then put the teachers in contact with the closest appropriate global educator.

If you are a teacher, you can access the Global Educators' Register here.

The Global School Partnership is a consortium of the British Council, Cambridge Education Foundation, UK One World Linking Association and VSO. For more information on the programme, please visit the Global School Partnerships website.
